How You Can Get Involved

Freeport Community Players provides a wide variety of opportunities for people who love theater and want to experience it "from the inside". There are options to suit just about everyone's skill level, interests, and schedule.

The first step is to think about what you might like to do and how much time you can devote to it. The list below can help you narrow down the options. The second step is the most important one: contact us or complete our convenient volunteer signup form! We'll let you know what we've got going on and we can put you on the list of people to contact when we are looking for volunteers.

Onstage

Opportunity: Spring Play, Summer Musical (Actors)
How to Sign Up: auditions
Skills: varies (see audition notices)
Schedule: typically 3-4 rehearsals a week for two months, rehearsals during the weekend and every night the week leading up to opening night, then 10 shows over 3 weekends

Opportunity: Sparkle Weekend show (Actors)

Schedule: typically 2-3 rehearsals a week for two months, nightly rehearsals the week leading up to opening night, 2 performances Sparkle Weekend

Opportunity: Play Readings (Actors)
How to Sign Up: ask to be added to our play reading casting call list; the director of the reading will select and call people from this list and other sources to cast the reading
Skills: Unlike staged productions, play readings do not require memorizing lines and stage directions, so this is a great opportunity to "get your feet wet" and see how it feels to be on stage. For readings, we are looking for people who read well and can convey the meaning and emotion of the script without props and staging.
Schedule: typically the cast meets a few times before the public reading

Opportunity: musicals (Musicians)
How to Sign Up: ask to be added to our musician contact list, send resume
Skills: varies (talk to show contact listed on audition notices)
Schedule: varies; for pit band nightly rehearsals the week or two leading up to opening night, all performances (about 10 over three weekends for summer musical, two in one weekend for Sparkle Weekend), for rehearsal pianist typically 2-3 rehearsals a week for two months

Backstage

Opportunity: makeup artist
Description: applies stage makeup
Skills: we'll train you, but it's helpful if you have experience applying makeup...bonus points for stage makeup experience
Schedule: as many performances as possible for the run of the show, plus the dress and tech rehearsals in the week leading up to opening night; most of the time is spent before the show starts, but sometimes makeup help is needed during the show

Opportunity: hair stylist
Description: styles performers' hair
Skills: it's helpful if you have experience styling hair
Schedule: as many performances as possible for the run of the show, plus the dress and tech rehearsals in the week leading up to opening night; most of the time is spent before the show starts, but sometimes styling help is needed during the show

Opportunity: dresser
Description: helps performers get into costumes, assists with quick changes during the show
Skills: no skill required...except maybe cat eyes to see in the dark of the stage wings
Schedule: as many performances as possible for the run of the show, plus the dress and tech rehearsals in the week leading up to opening night

Opportunity: stage hand
Description: help stage manager set up the set and props before the show, move props and set pieces during the show, and put it all away after the show
Skills: no skill required, you just need to be detail-oriented and be able to move quickly
Schedule: all performances, all rehearsals for at least the week leading up to opening night

Opportunity: lightboard operator
Description: operates the board that controls the theatrical lighting during the performances
Skills: experience with lightboard operation helpful, but we can train you; operators must be trained and cleared with the FPAC manager to use the equipment (we'll get you through that)
Schedule: all performances, all rehearsals for at least the week leading up to opening night, including tech rehearsals

Opportunity: soundboard operator
Description: operates the board and other equipment that controls the audio (sound effects, music) and amplification for the performance
Skills: audio experience extremely helpful, but we can train you on the basic; operators must be trained and cleared with the FPAC manager to use the equipment (we'll get you through that)
Schedule: all performances, all rehearsals for at least the week leading up to opening night, including tech rehearsals

In the House (Audience Services)

How to Sign Up: request we put your name on the list to be considered for any of these tasks.

Opportunity: house manager
Description: oversees all offstage, audience-related activity, such as ushering and ticket taking
Skills: experience with house management -- or at least with organizing people -- is a big plus in this job
Schedule: attends production meetings in the weeks leading up to opening night, some on-your-own time needed to organize house staff and communicate policies, must be available for all performances from the time the lobby opens to the time the audience leaves

Opportunity: usher
Description: hands out programs, takes tickets, assists the audience with seating
Skills: no skill needed, but a pleasant smile is a big plus
Schedule: very flexible, sign up for as few or as many shows as you want

Opportunity: box office manager
Description: oversees ticket sales on performance nights
Skills: good with money, doesn't get flustered when the crowds gather
Schedule: it's best if the box office manager is available to be at the box office for all performances (until the box is reconciled after the show begins)

Opportunity: box office/concessions assistant
Description: helps sell tickets and concessions
Skills: good at making change
Schedule: very flexible, sign up for as few or as many shows as you want

Opportunity: concessions manager
Description: oversees concessions, including deciding what will be sold and what the pricing will be, and getting the items to be sold
Skills: attention to details, willingness to take charge
Schedule: some on-you-own-time to organize things, it's best if the concessions manager is available to be in the concession booth for all performances (before the show and during intermission)

Artistic Preparation

These jobs generally require some experience and training. If you are interested in these areas but have little or no experience, we can set you up as an assistant to an experienced designer to get you started.

Opportunity: costume designer
Description: work with artistic director to design costumes, work alone or recruit costume assistants to construct, gather and purchase costume pieces, work with cast to plan and rehearse costume changes, recruit and oversee dressers as needed
Skills: good design sense, research skills, sewing skills very helpful, knowledge of sources for inexpensive costume pieces very helpful
Schedule: weekly production team meetings for about two months, a couple of rehearsals for fittings, attendence at technical and dress rehearsals the week leading up to opening night, and lots of on-your-own time gathering and constructing costumes

Opportunity: makeup designer
Description: work with artistic director to design makeup, including special effects makeup as needed
Skills: experience with stage makeup
Schedule: a couple of production team meetings, attendance at tech and dress rehearsals, it's best if the makeup designer is available before all performances to help apply makeup and oversee assistant makeup artists

Opportunity: hairstyle designer
Description: work with artistic director to design hairstyles, including wigs and hairpieces as needed
Skills: experience with styling hair
Schedule: a couple of production team meetings, attendance at tech and dress rehearsals, it's best if the hairstyle designer is available before all performances to help style hair and oversee assistant stylists

Opportunity: set designer
Description: work with artistic director to design sets and set dressing, draft set construction plans
Skills: experience with set design a must
Schedule: several pre-production meetings with director, weekly production team meetings, attendance at tech and dress rehearsals

Opportunity: lighting designer
Description: work with artistic director to design theatrical lighting (color, effects, instrument placement, cues), work with lighting techs to hang and focus lights, work with lightboard operator to refine and write cues
Skills: experience with theatrical lighting design a must
Schedule: several pre-production meetings with director, attendance at tech and dress rehearsals

Opportunity: sound designer
Description: work with artistic director to design sound (effects, music), gather and process sound for cue CDs, work with soundboard operator to refine and write cues; designing microphone placement for amplification sometimes needed
Skills: experience with sound design and production very helpful
Schedule: pre-production meetings with director, attendance at tech and dress rehearsals, on-your-own time to gather and process audio source material

Opportunity: props manager
Description: work with artistic director to identify props needed for production, gather and/or construct props
Skills: experience helpful, but not required...you just have to be clever and a good shopper
Schedule: weekly production meetings, on-your-own time to gather/make props, attendance at a few rehearsals

Opportunity: lighting tech
Description: hang and focus theatrical lighting
Skills: experience helpful, but not required; acrophobics need not apply
Schedule: a couple of long sessions about a week before the show

Opportunity: master carpenter
Description: works with set designer to create plans for set construction, oversses set construction and installation; may recruit and work with assistants
Skills: experience helpful
Schedule: work on your own time to meet installation deadlines...but it does take a fair amount of work to build these things

Opportunity: set construction assistant
Description: works with master carpenter to build, install and paint sets
Skills: no experience necessary, but it's helpful to be handy with tools and a paintbrush
Schedule: set by master carpenter, but somewhat flexible

Directing/Organizing

Opportunity: director

Description: develops the artistic vision for the show, works with the actors and designers and production team to execute the vision
Skills: generally speaking, we are looking for experienced directors for our shows. however, we do have opportunities - particularly with our play readings - for folks who want to try their hand at directing
Schedule: for mainstage productions artistic directors are at every rehearsal, every audition, every production team meeting, and they do a lot of "homework" to prepare, starting well before auditions; for play readings the director's load is much lighter

Opportunity: music director
How to Sign Up: request we put your name on the list to be considered for this position. If you have experience, send along a resume.
Description: provides the director with evaluations during casting, works with the cast to teach and refine musical numbers, conducts the pit band
Skills: experience with choral and/or orchestral direction, good ear
Schedule: attendance at all music, tech and dress rehearsals, including separate rehearsals with pit band as needed

Opportunity: stage manager

Description: in charge of everything backstage, including organizing actors, managing stage hands, calling technical cues during performances...next to directing this may be the biggest job on a production
Skills: must be SUPER organized, must be good at ordering people around (nicely), experience a BIG plus
Schedule: attendance at all rehearsals and performances, you'll be the first to arrive and the last to leave

Opportunity: producer

Description: responsible for keeping the production running smoothly; keeps tabs on everything from rehearsal schedules to publicity to budgets; lots of recruiting; chief trouble-shooter
Skills: must be SUPER organized, must be good at recruiting and managing people and delegating tasks, experience a BIG plus
Schedule: attendance at pre-production meetings, weekly production meetings, LOTS of on-your-own time taking care of details and following up with production team members

Publicity

Opportunity: program manager

Description: gathers program contents, lays out program, sends program files to the printer after they are approved
Skills: computer skills, good desktop publishing design sense
Schedule: work on your own time, as long as you meet the publication deadline

Opportunity: sign painter

Description: paints and posts the signs for shows that get displayed on the Ben & Jerry's railing and at the end of the street the night of the show
Skills: handy with a paintbrush, able to color within the lines most of the time, helpful if you can translate the program design to the signboard on your own (not have to have the outlines drawn for you)
Schedule: work on your own time, we'll give you the materials and a deadline

Opportunity: poster/flyer distributor

Description: takes posters to businesses and other locations to be posted, distributes flyers to businesses and/or in the town square
Skills: no skills necessary, but ability to get to locations a must
Schedule: work on your own, we'll supply the posters and flyers and a deadline to get them distributed

Opportunity: graphic designer

Description: designs the artwork for each production, does the layout for posters, flyers, postcards, ads, program covers, signs, etc.
Skills: good design skills, good computer skills
Schedule: work on your own schedule to meet deadlines

Opportunity: press relations

Description: contact media outlets to try to get coverage of FCP activities, including show reviews
Skills: good people skills, good follow-through
Schedule: work on your own time, this can be as time-consuming as you want to make it

Opportunity: writer

Skills: good writing skills
Schedule: work on your time to meet deadlines

Other

Opportunity: committees
How to Sign Up: ask to be added to the list of people to contact when committee assignments are being distributed, in some cases you may get added immediately
Description: this is where a lot of the work setting the direction of FCP gets done; committee needs vary widely from committee to committee depending on the task the committee is charged with
Skills: willingness to stick with the project and do whatever needs to be done
Schedule: varies from committee to committee, but there are generally some meetings, some prep time, and lots of discussions

Opportunity: phone calls and face-to-face contacts

Description: we are always looking for people who are willing to make "cold calls" to businesses and individuals to alert them to upcoming activities, recruit volunteers, solicit ads or donations, etc.; sometimes face-to-face contact is better than a phone call to accomplish the task
Skills: good phone skills, pleasant demeanor, sales skills helpful (but not "hard sell")
Schedule: work on your own time, but sometimes we need rapid turnaround
